I have tried 5 free for my 7D and 6D. The shutter count has been the same as the shutter count I got from Canon. Well, at Canon I got "less than 32000" for 7D and "less than 30000" for 6D. I will revisit the same Canon service center next year to fix the aperture wheel and will ask again about the shutter count just for fun.
I just bought a 5D Mark IV Refurb from Canon Direct, and I wanted to check the actuation count. So based on the recommendation here, I purchased the ShutterCount app for approximately 5 bucks, and it did successfully show 13 shutter actuations on my Refurb. BTW, I was using a Mac.

There's nothing in the camera or any Canon-supplied utility that reveals this. But there are a handful of utilities that claim to be able to get this info out of the camera. I think I found more utilities for Windows -- but I have a Mac. So I found a utility that does this called (oddly enough) "Shutter Count".

Bracketing methods:1. Shutter speed or aperture2. ISO speed, Manual: +/-3 stops in 1/3-stop increments (can be combined with AEB) AE Lock. Auto: Applied in One-Shot AF mode with evaluative metering when focus is achieved. Manual: By AE lock button in all metering modes.

The camera has a lot more clicks than the rated life span of the shutter. It is possible that the shutter can go out anytime with a high shutter count.
